Mine is behaving so erratically right now, the back button just won't work and it turns the tv on in the middle of the night!
Having tried all the methods, think I'll have to get a new remote or just a new Apple TV. I'm worried I can't tell if it's the TV or the remote or both that have gone bad. Back button definitely is not responsive, but at times the TV has stopped listening to other touch or even the menu button either, like it comes and goes and when it's stuck I have to use my iPhone remote to get out or turn off.

I initially thought it was a remote issue not connecting but after a couple of videos and trials, I realized that the remote was not charging even though I left it connected to the lightening cable for an hour. I noticed when I did get it to connect randomly it showed 3% even after being on the charger for such a long time. So, I went another route and got out the DeoxIT D5 spray. Sprayed some on the lightening cable end and inserted in and out of the remote a few times before leaving it inside the remote to see if there was any change. I noticed the remote had connected to the apple tv because I was inadvertently scrolling while holding the remote. I went then to check the battery life and saw that this time it was connected and showed a charging symbol and started to charge 4% 6% now at 22%. Moral of my story is, I think the lightening connector inside the remote was oxidized maybe or at least needed to be cleaned. DeoxIT D5 to the rescue again! Maybe this will help someone else that thinks their apple remote has died.
I cleaned my remote and then it was working erratically, then I reset my Siri Remote and died lol, went to Apple and they said its dead, buy another one, I said ok but I watched a teardown, I managed to do it, disconnected the battery, cleaned everything and suddenly it came back from the dead so I saved myself 60 bucks.
