1. The bottom usually has the male protrusions and the top the female tabs. Pop a thin blade into the slit on the side perhaps having opened it a crack at the bottom end first. Whilst keeping it open you can lever the blade against the top to push the bottom side protrusions away from the upper tabs. Using a levering technique these protrusions simply pop away leaving the tabs intact. Excessive force is not required. I open mine sat on the sofa using PH0 screwdriver, a small size 3 flat bit and a small but flexible blade that's no longer very sharp and that has a flat tip. Once apart use rubbing alcohol to clean the rubber contacts which will often have grease on the underside of the rubber button. The alcohol should also be safe enough for the circuit board if the contacts need a brush off. Any grease prevents the buttons from working correctly. Occasionally graphite varnish may be required if cleaning does not improve things. You just dab a little on the underside of the offending buttons which makes for a better contact. Keep the screws in a safe place whilst you clean.
