Apple TV 4K: A Straightforward Review

Despite being a physical media fan I often stream movies and TV Shows. For the past year and a half I have used the Apple TV 4K to do this. In this video I give you my straightforward thoughts on it and why I use it over my TV’s built in apps.

  1. I’m a complete lover of all things Apple so switched from Sky Stream to Apple 4K TV. I have to disagree with you Ryan, this for me is the worst of all the Apple tech that I own. There is not any consistency among the streaming apps (netflix, Prime etc.). They all have varying functionality and work in different ways. Some might say that is the individual streaming services’ issue but, with Sky Stream, they all worked in exactly the same way. Siri Remote capabilities are not consistent and keep failing from streaming app to streaming app. E.g. the ‘what did (s)he just say? Function has suddenly stopped working with Prime and with ITVX. I’ve tried using the Apple TV app as a place to search and navigate as well as to save things as a playlist (it boasts itself as a real competitor to Sky Stream regarding this function). Unfortunately, in the main, the recommendations are Apple TV+ content first and foremost, the recommendations aren’t updated regularly enough and it doesn’t update with the most recent releases from the different streaming apps quickly enough. By the way, Netflix isn’t included as netflix are refusing to integrate fully which is a shame. Also, when accessing a ‘continue watching’ content from NOW TV, it took six steps to get to the content. I’m registered for the beta updates and so give feedback regularly through the Apple feedback app. Over the past six months, Apple have not addressed any of the issues I have submitted. The Apple 4K TV also doesn’t have ‘passthrough’ for audio. This means when I watch Dolby Atmos content through my soundbar I keep having to go back to my TV’s audio settings to make changes. Phew! Got all that off my chest 😂. I just think it’s only fair viewers have both sides of the story before spending money on this VERY expensive item compared to competitors.

  2. The Apple TV is fantastic and streaks ahead of any build it apps on TVs (especially that you can avoid being advertised to at any opportunity like on Google TV). The one really annoying thing for UK users are the restrictions around BBC iPlayer – no subtitles and no UHD (apparently due to Apple TV having different requirements for those in an app compared to how iPlayer is built for any other device out there).

  3. I have a apple tv in every room of my house and the movies you buy from the apple store is that good in picture quality I quit buy physical media and they are so much cheaper than buying 4k blu-rays

  4. I have had Apple TV for years as it such a useful hassle free streaming device. I have one (Apple TV HD) in the spare bedroom connected to non smart old tv so it is useable as I also do not have an aerial to connect to my ariel sockets (!)
Recently upgraded my living room to include the latest Apple 4K tv (I know its been around for 3 years) and 2 Apple HomePods because I wanted cinematic sound without the need for lots of speakers everywhere and I love it – the sound quality is good whether I am using the tv apps or SkyQ so perfect. The advantages of the HomePods in my living room is great as I can turn the lights out just by saying turn the lights out.
Am looking at your videos and deciding whether I want Sky Q anymore as the costs are toooo high.
Thanks for your videos – I find them useful

  5. I’ve had my Apple TV now for 10 years and I would never go back, in the early days it was difficult as half the apps we have now weren’t there but now it’s incredible, so easy to use and intuitive, my mum uses a BT TV box and I can’t stand it plus we have chromecast for going abroad as it’s easier to transport but always miss my Apple tv.

The only thing I would say you missed is the fact Apple doesn’t serve you ads, whereas your in built os systems track you and serve you ads, so you never stop really paying for your tv.
