When my TV remote stopped working, I could’ve just replaced the battery. Instead, I designed and built my own universal smart remote — complete with 3D printed buttons, a custom PCB, and full Home Assistant integration. Was it a massive overreaction? Absolutely. But now it controls my whole smart home.

any plans to add IR to it?
What software do you use to build the PCB? And you may have mentioned it in the video but now I can’t find it, which 3D printer do you use as well?
I recently had an idea related to this project 🙂
By swapping out the battery you were using with a bl-5c and crimping a JST connector to a BC-35 interface you would be able to have an easily replaceable battery by adding an access panel to the lower section of the model!
also adding a VS1838B IR receiver and an IR LED to the board would allow you to fully recreate the oldschool harmony experience, especially being able to control things like air conditioners and other types of displays like the BFGD-class monitors,
I think there are some interesting things that could come from slightly altering the circuit!
I still come back to these videos a lot when I'm struck with inspiration to see what can be done with the ESP chips 🙂
what happened to watching TV?
i had to click away cookie banners on every damn channel today
I want this remote so badly, but with a touchscreen, but I don't have the tools, money or knowledge to do this.
My father has parkinsons. I'm going to make a large scale version with big clicky buttons.
The only enhancement that I can think of is a notification LED on some of the 'provider' specific buttons to indicate something new is available.
Legendary
Would you consider an upgraded version that also has infrared led receiver and emitters?
You could grab any old remote and record each button you want to save, then make them retransmit the same signal when certain buttons are pressed.
You could even do accelerometer for automatic deep sleep, but also automatic profile switching based on the pitch of the remote, those ir diodes are very directional so i think it might be possible depending on the home setup
