  1. Just tried this comparison with a 2023 77 inch Sony A95L QD-OLED playing the exact same 1080, 720, and 480 source media both directly from home media server directly to TV vs same source via the Plex app on 2021 Apple TV 4K running tvOS 18.4. Both pictures were great! The difference was really negligible. If anything the Apple TV did a slightly better job with the 480 and 720 content where the Sony would tend to be overly sharp in some places and lose a little detail in others. This is being very very nitpicky though. However when out of curiosity tried a new 2024 Roku Ultra both in 4k and passthrough, picture was immediately and noticeably degraded.

  2. “Let the TV do the upscaling” UNLESS you use an Nvidia Shield, or, use a pc with RTX card, with RTX video super resolution turned on.

Nvidias upscaling for video is unmatched in quality!

  3. What 9 years is too much for you, here I have one samsung from 2009 and one from 2016 still running good. And to be honest the 2009 one can give run for the money to current days LEDs.

  4. I’m not going to lie I do miss my at home 3D movies I still have my Panasonics plasmas VT50 and ST60 with the oppo 103 at my kids house I go there and we usually watch one 3D wasn’t as horrible as most influencers and tv reviewers made it out to be

  5. With regards to the “Dirty Dark Scenes”, you can look for a setting “HDMI Video signal” and change the dynamic range from “Auto” or “Limited” to “Full” for Sony TVs. For other TVs it would be the HDMI Black Levels i think.

TVs have problem distinguish full hdmi dynamic range (0-255) from limited dynamic range (16-235).

    (Nothing to do with HDR)

My Sony TV clips the black area when set to “Auto”. It looks so much better when set to “Full”. The dark area clips much less.

But you will need to adjust the black level in brightness setting to improve contrast

  6. Thank you. Quick question if you don’t mind:

With a TCL TV, TCL soundbar, and Apple TV 4K, what should be plugged into the eARC port on the TV. The Apple TV, or the TCL soundbar?

  7. For the first time i hear wrong answers by you. The Superbowl was broadcasted in dolby Vision 8.4 which is hlg and not hdr10 and is the only dv format thats able of being live encoded into dv because there is mo scene detection only level 1 luminance metadata.

  8. Tip for dirty dark scenes aka macro blocking for Samsung TVs – try adjusting Shadow Detail. You can also try replacing your HDMI cables. Another tip is to turn off any fake, simulated HDR settings or anything that would force HDR on when viewing non HDR content. Hope this helps.
